Joining the ranks of award-show elite.
By Colin Peters
It’s the grand-slam of show business: The EGOT. Winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award has only been done ten times*. It’s an elite club with members like Audrey Hepburn, Mel Brooks and Whoppi Goldberg. Yes, Whoopi Goldberg. She was the last one to win all four; she won an Emmy in 2002 for hosting a special series and a Tony the same year for co-producing Thoroughly Modern Millie. So, who will be next? I don’t know. But I have some good guesses.
We all want a new album from JT. You may not realize it, but there is a void in your life that can only be filled by the former mousketeer. While some of us take consolation in the Kunis defense, others are upset at the disappointingly-low levels of sexy lovesounds. Still, it’s not like JT is taking it easy. He knows everyone loves his music; he’s just trying to make us love all of him. I’m not saying he’ll be getting an Oscar or Tony anytime soon; but if (and when) he does, you can fondly remember the time I spammed you this article and smile.
He’s already half way there; and if a guy can win an Emmy for a segment called “Dick in a Box,” he can do just about anything. He won two more Emmy’s this year, one for guest appearance on SNL and one for the music he wrote for his monologue. He’s been good to go in the Grammy category since 2004.
Timberlake has repeatedly proven his comedy chops on SNL, but his performances in Alpha Dog and The Social Network prove he’s serious about acting. An Oscar may be far away, but it’s in the cards. He could win an one for his music, too. The Academy showed love for Three Six Mafia so anything is possible. After that, as a musician and actor, there’s no reason he can’t get on stage and snag a Tony. As long as he doesn’t try to slip in the Spidey suit for Turn Off the Dark, I think he’s got it.
Just a Tony away from all four, Kate Winslet will be the next EGOT. I have hopes for Timberlake, but I have expectations for Winslet. She won her Emmy this year for her titular role in Mildred Pierce and her Oscar in 2008 for The Reader. Strangely enough, Winslet started her road to the fantastic four with a Grammy in 2000. The award was for Best Spoken Word Album for Children; a category started in 1993 and first won by Audrey Hepburn. Gasp! What are he odds? Though Winslet doesn’t seem to have any immediate plans for the stage, it’s only a matter of time. Winning a Tony Award naturally follows saving a life, right? Maybe not. But Kate Winslet is a badass and she will be the next EGOT.
Michael Giacchino – I fell in love with his creepy music in LOST. Your girlfriend fell in love with him for his music from Pixar’s Up. Like Winslet, he only needs a Tony.
Randy Newman – Bunny Business aside, Newman needs a Tony to complete his collection…noticing a trend here?
Julie Andrews – Marry Poppins is looking to add a Tony to her list of favorite things. Corny, I know.
Robin Williams –The funnyman needs a Tony and based on this short list, it’s pretty damn hard to win one.
*James Earl Jones, Liza Minelli and Barbara Streisand all have EGOTs in their names, but each joined the club with a special or honorary award.
